The Goals of Trauma-Informed Training

Trauma-informed care aims to promote cohesive strategies to deal with trauma between an organization, its staff or clients, and the broader community. 

We begin with developing awareness of how trauma seeps into people’s lives and takes hold of their psyche. We ask a lot of whys and reflect on our own understanding of trauma at its root. After all, it’s not just big events that leave lasting trauma. Once we’ve got a solid structure from which to build, our goal becomes empowering people to make collaborative choices so they can find trust in one another and themselves.

At the end of the day, trauma-informed care training aims to educate those who might see people suffering from trauma and teach them strategies to best respond.

At an organizational level, trauma-informed care offers change in the fabric of team culture to emphasize appropriate responses to trauma effects. We will work to re-conceptualize our perspective of employees or clients. Then, we will work through creating new relationships amid related policies and procedures. By framing the shape of our organizational culture, we can reframe the way we support the people who make it up.

It might seem small, but the positive results will be immense.

The shift for an organization is to create compassionate curiosity. We will re-frame thoughts from “what’s wrong with” into a trauma-supported “what’s happened” to facilitate understanding in approach. Once we can see how often behaviors are a response instead of a choice, we can revive respect between individuals and groups.
